A Perfect Fall Evening for a Once-in-a-Lifetime Moment

A few days ago, I had the opportunity to photograph one of the most meaningful moments two people can share - a surprise proposal. Trey reached out with a simple plan: bring Breanna to Greenway Farms in Hixson, find the perfect spot by the trails, and capture the moment she had no idea was coming.

Greenway Farms is one of my favorite places for proposal photography. The mix of wide-open fields, walking paths, pockets of trees, and soft natural light makes it ideal for intimate moments like this. And for Trey and Breanna, it turned into the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable evening.

Planning the Surprise at Greenway Farms

Before they arrived, we walked through the plan to make sure everything went smoothly and find the best spot.

He was a blend of excitement and nerves, checking his pocket for the ring, repeating the timing, glancing over the trail to make sure Breanna hadn’t turned the corner yet.

One of the best parts of photographing proposals is witnessing that nervous energy. It’s the moment right before life changes.

Portraits After the Proposal

Once the excitement settled, we walked around Greenway Farms to photograph a mix of portraits while they were still floating on the adrenaline of the moment.

We used a few key areas around the park, including:

  • The open field near the trail entrance - perfect for wide, glowing golden-hour shots
  • Shaded tree lines - soft light, great for intimate close-ups
  • The gravel trail - to capture that “just engaged” walk together

Because they were still laughing, emotional, and holding onto each other, the portraits turned out incredibly natural. You can feel the joy in every image.

Tips for Planning a Surprise Proposal

After capturing dozens of proposal sessions, here are a few quick tips:

  • Pick a location with space and good lighting
  • Have a simple plan.
  • Coordinate a “landmark” or stopping point so you know exactly when to kneel
  • Celebrate afterward! The best portraits always come when emotions are fresh
  • Tell me your plan in advance so I can position myself perfectly without being seen
